Thin-film material research

Info

Before researchers can think of fabrication techniques and devices, they must understand the nature of the materials they are working with.

This is our group's strength, testing and analysing novel materials to determine whether and how best they can be applied to working technologies.

We approach this from a combined theoretical and experimental perspective with a strong focus on crystalline organic semiconductors (OTFT).

Using our combined expertise, we develop scalable fabrication techniques to harness the potential of organic semiconductors (OTFT) to enable high performance optoelectronic devices, from growth right through to integration.

As well as leading the whole department, Paul spearheads the ERC project Epos Crystalli which plays a central role in the Thin Film Material Research group. Through this project, the full potential of organic single crystalline devices is being realised, with research spanning the molecular dynamics of such materials right through to their integration in organic thin film transistors and other such devices.

Currently also a professor at KU Leuven, Jan is Chief Scientist of the LAE department and plays a critical role in this research group as well as the Epos Crystalli project. He brings to the table expertise in circuit design using organic and oxide materials and a broad theoretical knowledge of the physics behind the materials we use in this group. This expertise presents a strong contribution to the full journey of materials researched by this group. In addition to his involvement with Epos Crystalli, Jan will be commencing his own ERC project on video holography. Using cutting edge optoelectronics, this project will push dynamic display applications a dramatic step closer to reality.

Cédric is a key contributor to the Thin Film Materials research group as well as the Epos Crystalli project. His illustrious research career lends him a thorough knowledge of growth mechanisms in organic crystalline materials. Combining both an experimental and theoretical approach, Cédric has contributed to the inception and implementation of numerous working models and simulations that assist with understanding the growth conditions of these materials.
