As part of imec’s R&D to scale future computing beyond what is possible with silicon CMOS, the we have identified a number of challenges where our expertise may be crucial to the design of efficient brain-like chips: scalable, energy-efficient, highly flexible network architectures that can learn with incredible efficiency.
Part of imec’s efforts in neuromorphic computing are embedded in the EC Horizon2020 project NeuRAM3. The project’s goal is to implement novel hardware capable of processing realistic problems at ultra-low power. Imec is developing an overarching architecture that is scalable, highly flexible, and uses very little energy.
Imec also aims to optimize RRAM memory cells to mimic the synaptic behavior of neurons.
